Before coming to Church

  • Make sure you are well rested, and ready physically to serve
  • Make sure your shoes are neat and clean
  • Make sure your hands and fingernails are clean
  • Girls Must have their hair tied back in a ponytail, or braid

When you have arrived at the Church

  • It is preferred to have 3 servers at each mass to share all of the duties of serving the mass but there can be as many as 4 servers at each mass, or as few as one.
    • The Server of the Cross is responsible for carrying the processional cross
    • The Servers of the Altar carry the candles and prepare the altar
    • The Server of the Roman Missal will hold the Roman Missal for the priest, If there is only 3 servers, the Server of the Cross will be responsible for holding the Roman Missal
  • At masses when incense will be used during the celebration, the Thurifer will carry the Thurible and the Boat.
    • This server is in charge of handling the incense censer, including lighting the charcoals placed inside the Thurible.
    • One additional server can help the Thurifer by carrying  the incense Boat
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of Mass, on certain occasions, you will be asked to arrive 30 minutes before the start of the Mass
  • Put on an Alb that is long enough to reach your ankles
  • Put on a cross
  • If you will be carrying the Cross make sure the Roman Missal is on your seat.
  • Check to see that the cruet is filled with water, and the finger bowl is empty.
  • Place the cruet, the bowl and finger towel on the credence table.
  • Place the chalice on the credence table.

  • At about 5 minutes before the beginning of mass, the two servers who will process with the candles should light the candles at the Ambo, and take them to the back of the church. Be careful when lighting the candles, light them while they are in their stands, never when someone is holding them. Keep any part of your Alb away and hair away from the flame while holding the candles.

 

  • THERE MUST NOT BE ANY LOUD TALKING OR LAUGHING BY THE ALTAR SERVERS WHILE WAITING FOR MASS TO BEGIN, EITHER IN THE SACRISTY OR THE CHURCH. NO RUNNING IN THE SACRISTY OR IN THE CHURCH AT ANY TIME. SHOW REVERENCE AND RESPECT FOR WHERE YOU ARE, AND WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO AT MASS.
